3 free (and 3 not so free) Procreate brush recommendations, PLUS FREEBIE!

The main program I use to create my art is Procreate, and while the default brushes that come with app are fine to use I totally recommend getting some extra ones.

I’ve compiled a list of some of my favourites, some are free and some do cost money but they’re not expensive at all. Most of them are my holy grails, there’s barely a piece on my Instagram feed that hasn’t had at least one of these included in it.

Let’s start with the free brushes!

I know I said extra brushes in the intro but I had to mention one brush that actually comes with the Procreate app - the 6B pencil. I love this for sketching and making pieces that are a bit more textural. If I’m going for texture then I’m usually using this brush or a paid for brush below.

The Fancy Finesse Brush by MissyMeyer was the first free brush I downloaded when I got my iPad and Procreate. It’s still one of my go to brushes, if I’m not wanting texture I’m probably going to reach for this one. Although I do like the standard download, I have customised it to a monoline brush. It’s so streamlined and lovely and if I had to pick a favourite child it would be this one.

A bit less streamlined than the Fancy Finesse brush is the Rad & Happy Monoweight Brush from Rad & Happy. I tend to reach for it less for actual lettering as I’d rather go for the Fancy Finesse brush however, this brush is excellent for colouring and filling in shapes - perfect for making custom gradients.

Wait til the end to get your hands on a free brush of mine!!

And where to spend your money

If you want texture then get your hands on the Gel Pen brush by Quiver Supply Co. It’s one of the brushes in their Lettering Toolkit on Design Cuts and makes that package worth it in my opinion - I love it! There are over 290 brushes in this set and a lot of them are great. I just reach for the gel pen more than others. (Note: I was given this set for free by Design Cuts to review previously but I do genuinely love the Gel Pen brush)

Sticking with the texture theme, ever wanted to add more texture and tones to your work but not know where to start? I recommend starting with the Beat Tones brush pack by True Grit Texture Supply! I bought a pack with the Beat Tones, Lithotones, and Distress Tones and while I do use and love all three I recommend the Beat Tones pack over the other two if you don’t want to spend too much all at once.

Finally some good ol’ basics that are excellent and well worth the money. The Letter Builder and Grid Builder brush packs by Ian Barnard and Stefan Kunz are perfect for beginners and pros alike. The Grid Builder helps your composition and the Letter Builder helps for consistency and just general letter drawing practice. Created by two amazing hand lettering artists so they’re sure to do the job, and I’ve definitely noticed a difference when I use them compared to when I don’t and try to completely freestyle!

These are just my go to favourites, if you’d like to see more recommendations on Procreate brushes be sure to let me know below!
