Let's talk magazines!

I’m a big fan of magazines but I don’t find myself buying them all too often these days. I remember as a teen I would buy this same magazine every fortnight from my local corner shop and binge read it when I got home. I don’t actually remember the name of the magazine but I remember it was £2.

Nowadays I visit the very cool magazine shop near my work probably every couple of months and see if anything takes my fancy. Usually if it does it’s one of the four below, but I do wish magazines cost £2 still! Although two of the below don’t exist anymore so I’d happily pay full price for them if they ever returned.

Frankie

One you’ve probably heard raved about a lot but actually it’s probably my least favourite here. I must admit I mainly buy them for the visuals, I read probably about half the magazine but some articles just aren’t for me — and that’s okay! The visuals though are beautiful, and each issue comes with a pull out A2 poster. I actually use back issues to cut up and stick into my bullet journal, yes I’m one of those people who are totally fine cutting up their old magazines.

Unfortunately this magazine doesn’t print anymore which is a shame as it was my favourite to read! It’s the young adult version of Fashion Quarterly and really hit that millennial age group. While there were a bit too many pages full of fashion look books the rest of the magazine made up for it for interesting but fun articles that felt relevant. Plus, I totally got into the magazine once haha, it was one of those pages where they repost ‘fan photos’ and I just happened to have a photo featuring the magazine on my Instagram.

Collective

Again another one that isn’t in print anymore, I think anyway, it’s still online though but I find I’m less likely to read something when it’s online unless I’m a big fan and it’s not being advertised all over my Twitter or Instagram feed. However when it was in print I really liked this magazine, each issue tended to have a theme so while I didn’t buy every issue I bought all the ones that I thought I’d like. I loved that it wasn’t filled with pages and pages of models selling clothing, that’s not the kind of magazine I like. I want to get a magazine filled with interesting articles that inspire me, not 20 pages of stick thin models in clothes I probably wouldn’t wear (no offence if you’re into that kinda thing, you do you).

Hello May

A recent addition to my collection, if you didn’t know I got engaged around 9 months ago now so I finally feel like I can buy those fancy wedding magazines. I’ve tried out a few NZ/Aussie wedding magazines and this is my favourite although some of the actual business recommendations aren’t that useful, the magazine is just so damn pretty! Plus the likelihood I’d use the recommendations in the magazine isn’t too high so the ideas and visuals are more what I’m after. I’ve started cutting things out and making a wee physical wedding mood board notebook which these types of magazines are perfect for!

I’d also like to give a wee shoutout to Together journal, another wedding magazine, and Frankie Food which you can probably guess is all about food!
