Five Star Books of 2020

I used to write book reviews on another blog but I've since retired that blog so I thought I would share some book recommendations here.

Don't worry I'm not going to be reviewing every book I read this year, especially as I'm aiming to read 55, but I'm planning on sharing the occasional update if I read some really good books.

Last year I read some good books so I thought I'd share a handful of my favourites!

Loki: Where Mischief Lies by Mackenzi Lee

Not going to lie, I went into this thinking it was going to be a graphic novel so was a little disappointed when it wasn't. But that's where the disappointment stops, once I got through the first chapter I was hooked and could not put it down. I love the Marvel universe and Loki in particular, however, I don't really read this sort of novel but I loved it!

Take the Loki you know and love from the films and go back to his childhood and imagine the adventures he got up to. Now add in his best friend Amora who's a sorceress, that’s definitely a recipe for trouble. Full of magic, adventure, and action - definitely one of my top favourites of the year.

Heartstopper Volumes 1,2&3 by Alice Oseman

I can't even put into words how adorable and cute Heartstopper is. I devoured the first volume so fast that I had to quickly get my hands on the other two volumes and then read all the extra episodes online (you can find it on Tapas).

It's about Charlie and Nick and their developing friendship. Charlie is openly gay since he got outed at school the year before and Nick is the softhearted jock, they quickly become unlikely friends and the rest is history. You can probably see how that ends, but that's just Volume one, there's way more story ready for you in the following two, soon to be three, volumes.

The Switch by Beth O'Leary

My favourite book of 2019 was The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary and boy does this second book live up to it's greatness. Totally different storyline and characters this standalone novel has basically made me resign to the fact I will buy and read anything Beth O'Leary releases.

Imagine Freaky Friday but with a young woman and her grandma, oh and they don't switch bodies - just everything else! City, house, friends, even their phones. Leena needs a break from work and her city life and Eileen needs to get out there, have an adventure and maybe find some love. Just a really warming and hilarious novel that you need to read!

The Hand on the Wall by Maureen Johnson

Okay seriously if you are to read any book on this list (although you really should read them all) then the Truly Devious series is the one. The Hand on the Wall is the third instalment to the series and really it is the perfect ending to a five star series.

The Truly Devious series follows true crime fan Stevie Bell in her journey through Ellingham Academy. But the fun back story is the original owner Albert Ellingham's wife and daughter were kidnapped from there many many years ago and Stevie thinks she might be able to solve the unsolvable crime.

Even if you're not into thriller or mystery type books, trust me neither am I, do yourself a favour and try these books. Oh and the audiobook narrator is excellent if you don't do well with physical books!

What about you? What excellent books did you read in 2020, care to share in the comments? I’m always after a good book recommendation!
